Michele Owen with 'Abundance'

About Michele

I am an Australian artist who lives and works on a small Victorian rural property nestled amongst picturesque hills in outer Melbourne. I paint from an expansive studio enveloped by towering eucalyptus trees that teem with raucous birdlife. My local area near the Yarra Valley is renown for its artistic heritage, pristine bushland and vineyards.

A strong connection to the land and a passion for travel are constant sources of inspiration in my work. My large rambling garden and bushland walks along the Yarra River with my faithful border collies prompt recurring botanical and natural abstract themes.

My love of travel throughout Australia and to far flung historical places is reflected in a painterly narrative of rich layers, texture and patina. I work in many media including oil and acrylic paint, pastel and charcoal, creating distinctive palettes that draw on my response to the natural world.

I love to work ‘en plain air’ in small studies that capture the essence of a place retuning to the studio to create larger works from memory. My aim is always to invoke the spirit of the bush or coastal regions I visit, to translate the magical experience of having all senses stimulated and calmed by time spent in nature. Our connection to nature and place intrigue me and are, I believe, vital to our wellbeing. I hope this transcends my art to evoke a response of elation and peace in the beholder.

I’m primarily a self taught artist and have studied independently with highly regarded Australian and international teachers and artists. My diverse background includes working in marketing communications and project management, and as a health practitioner. I now fully embrace life as an artist and find great joy in exploring its possibilities.
