Michele Owen is an Australian artist who lives and works on a small Victorian rural property nestled amongst picturesque hills near Melbourne. She paints from her rustic studio surrounded by horses, passing kangaroos and an abundance of native bird life. Her local area is renown for its artistic heritage, pristine bushland and vineyards.
Much of Michele’s childhood was spent immersed in the arts; drawing and writing in a home filled with music and taking formal studies in classical ballet and contemporary dance with the Victorian Ballet School.
Her diverse background includes working in marketing communications and project management, and as a health practitioner. She now fully embraces life as an artist and is finding great joy in exploring its possible directions.
A strong connection to nature and a passion for travel are constant sources of inspiration in her work. Her large rambling garden and daily bushland walks with Pip and Banjo, her faithful border collies, prompt recurring botanical and natural abstract themes.
Michele’s love of travel throughout Australia and to far flung historical places is reflected in a painterly narrative of rich layers, texture and patina. She uses a mixture of media including acrylic paint, pastel and charcoal, creating distinctive palettes that draw on her experience of the natural and built world.
'My paintings are often created as interpretations of my natural surroundings, memories and travels. I describe my work as lyrical. It’s expressive, emotive and conveys a sense of story and movement in an intuitive dance between loose evocative marks and uninhibited colour. Our primal connection to nature and place are a constant source of intrigue for me and, I believe, are vital to our wellbeing. I hope this transcends my art to evoke a response of elation and peace in the beholder.'
Michele is primarily a self taught artist and has studied independently with Australian and international teachers and artists.
